Tipping in IMVU Live Rooms

Cross-platform monetization for social presence

Tipping enables guests to directly support room hosts in real time, turning social moments—outfit showcases, performances, parties, and casual hangouts—into monetized experiences. What started as a mobile-first feature evolved into a unified, cross-platform system that now spans iOS, Android, and Web.

My Role

  • Product design across mobile and web

  • Interaction flows and UI patterns for tipping entry, confirmation, and chat feedback

  • Adapting the feature through a design system and theme transition

  • Partnering with product and engineering to maintain consistency across platforms and timelines

Chat-integrated “Tipped You” to reinforce social reward

What the Feature Does

  • Guests can tip room hosts directly inside IMVU rooms

  • Tips appear in the room chat to reinforce social recognition

  • Highlighted tips increase visibility and encourage participation

  • Hosts receive tips after an 18% IMVU processing fee

  • Optional private tipping keeps the transaction discreet

The iPad experience scales the mobile tipping flow to larger screens while maintaining consistency, clarity, and real-time social feedback.

The iPad split-screen design keeps the 3D room in view while surfacing preset and custom tipping options for frictionless, in-context support.

Platform Rollout & Evolution

Mobile-first launch (2022)

Tipping was initially introduced on iOS and Android, optimized for fast, lightweight interactions during live social moments.

Web expansion (2026)

The feature later launched on IMVU Web, adapting the interaction model to larger screens, cursor-based input, and desktop usage patterns—while preserving feature parity with mobile.

Feedback & Safety

A whitelisting system was initially designed, but deferred due to potential legal implications around content licensing.

Design Context & Constraints

Theme transition:

During development, IMVU transitioned from a light theme to a dark theme.
- Mobile screenshots reflect the earlier light UI
- Web screenshots reflect the newer dark theme and updated component system

Cross-platform consistency:

Core interactions (tip selection, confirmation, chat visibility) remain consistent, while layouts and affordances adapt per platform.

Real-time feedback:

Immediate visual confirmation reinforces trust and clarity around transactions.

Why This Matters

Tipping plays a key role in IMVU’s creator economy by:

  • Empowering hosts to earn directly from engagement

  • Encouraging higher-quality social experiences

  • Reinforcing positive feedback loops between hosts and guests

  • Extending monetization beyond scheduled events into everyday social moments
